What about ME

What about ME/ CVS

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) has been documented in the medical literature from 1934. (1) The Wallis description of ME (not Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, known as CFS - see below) was in 1957. (2) Sir Donald Acheson's (a former UK Chief Medical Officer) major review of ME was in 1959. (3)

In 1962, the distinguished neurologist Lord Brain included it in the standard textbook of neurology. (4)

ME has been formally classified by the World Health Organisation as a neurological disorder in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) since 1969 (ICD-8: Vol I: code 323, page 158; Vol II (Code Index) page 173).

The FNIC roster includes highly dedicated and respected patient advocates, doctors, celebrities and other VIPs, who share one goal: to acknowledge the severity of CFS and change the name to reflect this severity. The committee's membership presently stands at more than 20 members; click on the links below to read a bio and to learn more.

CDC conclusions in CFS

An individual’s unique combination of possible predisposing factors determines their response to a triggering event. This triggering agent pushes the individual past their threshold, within which they can maintain good health. In the majority of cases CFS is initially triggered by a viral infection, for example Ross River Virus (RRV), Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) and many others

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) was originally defined in 1988 when the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the US brought together a number of researchers who had been investigating a strange syndrome characterized by overwhelming fatigue

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS) and various other names, is a syndrome of unknown and possibly multiple etiology, affecting the central nervous system (CNS), immune, and many other systems and organs.

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown and is being investigated by researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry. For example, they are investigating whether there are immunological or virological explanations of CFS. It has been discovered that some patients show immunological abnormalities, such as high levels of circulating immune complexes, altered serum immunoglobulins and low levels of natural killer cells, but at present these findings are inconclusive.
